How does molecular complexity evolve?

Welcome to the Pillai Lab!
Our lab investigates how natural evolution crafts new protein structures and functions - and how those principles can be harnessed to design new proteins for biotechnology and medicine. Proteins fold, assemble into complexes, catalyze reactions, and switch between conformations through precisely arranged atomic interactions that arose over billions of years. We ask: how do new folds originate, molecular assemblies form, catalytic pockets emerge, and allosteric networks take shape? We deploy a range of computational and experimental tools to address these questions, including phylogenetic inference, ancestral protein reconstruction, deep-learning based protein structure prediction and design, as well as biochemical assays.
The Pillai Lab works at the intersection of protein evolution and design.
